So Much for Writing What You Know

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 19:49:08 PDT
Hopefully this strange bit of news will kill that terrible adage still haunting MFA workshops: “write what you know.” Apparently a writer for the Lonely Planet travel guidebooks plagiarized/invented large sections of his books. In one instance, he hadn’t even visited the country he was writing about: "They didn't pay me enough to go to Colombia. I wrote the book in San Francisco. I got the information from a chick I was dating—an intern at the Colombian consulate.” Yikes. Clearly the context of

Steve Hu: Newbigin, Syncretism, and the Emerging Church

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 17:37:44 PDT
Not long ago I was doing some research on the Internet on syncretism in connection with missions and I was fortunate to come across a paper mentioned on the Tall Skinny Kiwi blog by Steve Hu titled "Are We Syncretizing the Gospel: A Reflection Upon Lesslie Newbigin's Definition of Syncretism for the Church's Missionary Encounter with Culture." Steve presented this paper to a regional meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society in 2007, and as I read it I thought it was very helpful in reflec

Curse of a continent

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 15:02:33 PDT
The situation in Zimbabwe is dire; this much is clear however what to do to combat the dictatorial actions of Mugabe remains uncertain and a solution remains ever more elusive. It has become apparent, beyond any reasonable doubt, that Robert Mugabe lost the elections last month yet he remains in office. The initial hopes of an impending Mugabe resignation proved unfounded. So the question arises what should we do, or more importantly what can we do? Many people have suggested to me

Google…Now that WE KNOW the Numbers…What do WE KNOW?

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 15:10:01 PDT
I know a few things: 1. My son Max is very happy now with my Google buy for him at $490 and $430ish. I also know - because he just pinged me - that I am an ass for not owning Baidu at $250 as well. You can’t win ! I think the best thing about Google’s numbers, is not the numbers themselves (who the hell really knows what they all mean anyway), BUT, the market’s reaction… MUTED! It should be muted. If we were in a bull market, the Nasdaq would be flying on this news and the S&P futures wou

Kristy Lee Cook Leaves American Idol 2008

It's now down to the Top 6 in American Idol 2008.
Last night, and as expected, one of the girls was voted off the show and it was Oregonian Kristy Lee Cook!
Kristy and two other girls were in the danger zone yesterday ... they got the lowest number of votes for their not so good performances of Mariah Carey's songs the night before.
Kristy stood there, side by side with Syesha Mercado and Brooke White.
After her elimination, Kristy Lee playfully sat on the judges' table right in front of Simon Cowell and serenaded him with her performance of Mariah's song 'Forever'.

Next week, the Top 6 will battle it out with Phantom of the Opera composer Andrew Lloyd Webber! That's gotta be hard!
